Custom products at Boombah rely heavily on sublimation printing which allows for very dramatic and complex designs over traditional garment decorating like screen print. A tool was needed to allow customers to design these products, but had to stay within the same constraints and rules art and manufacturing use when producing products.
After lots of discussions and finding out the needs of customers, the art team, and service teams, we came up with a way to utilize an asset created from art that could be manipulated in the same way online as the art team could using vector techniques. This gave great flexibility to let customers design with the most creativity but still keep within the rules of producing the product.
The builder also allowed for all of the data to be collected and entered into the business ERP so estimates could be made, and orders get placed that went through the normal process all other orders go through. Because this builder was made in house, it didn’t need to have a separate process and extra steps trying to connect a 3rd party tool which couldn’t provide all the same functionality that was needed.
After several iterations of the builder, we were able to take the current tool set and transform the assets to be done in 3d space instead of 2d space. This made it much easier for the customer to see how the garment would actually be produced. Through the use of scripts and automation we are able to take the exact patterns being used to create the products to produce the visualizations the customers see, which ultimately led to less rounds of mock up revisions.
The builder currently is utilized by internal teams and customers for every order whether or not the order gets placed by phone or directly through the builder. It has become the source of truth for customized products. It also has allowed us to develop internal automations to help speed up asset creation, order production, order entry and time spent on phones per custom order.
